
SoCal Scullers perform well in first day of Head of the Charles 2016

Five SoCal Scullers raced in day one of the 52nd annual Head of the Charles Regatta, Oct 22 in Boston Mass.
Bill Bater, Kelly Pierce, Maddie Lipps, and Stesha Carle took on the 3-mile (4,800 meter) course starting with Bater’s entry in the Men’s Alumni Eight event at 12:12 p.m.
Bater sat in stroke seat in the Syracuse University alumni boat, finishing ahead of 14 other crews with a time of 17:03.963.
Up next, at 12:31 p.m., were Pierce and Lipps in the Women’s Alumni Eight. In three-seat of the Princeton Univesity “Fat Cat” boat, Pierce and her crew rowed to a gold-medal finish time of 16:10.798.
Meanwhile, Lipps sat in seven-seat of the Yale University “Boola Boola” alumni boat, coming in for a sixth-place finish at 17:32.181.
SCSC’s final race of the day was Carle with bow number 14 in the Women’s Championship Single Sculls at 4:06 p.m.
She crossed the finish line with a time of 19:54.859, earning the silver medal in the event.
She was in 8th place at the first checkpoint (Riverside), but quickly moved ahead to maintain her second-place position throughout every remaining marker of the race. The only person to finish ahead of her was recent Olympic silver medalist Gevvie Stone of Cambridge Boat Club.
Both Carle and Lipps will race again, Sunday at 9:30 a.m. in the Director’s Challenge Women’s Quadruple Scull.
Alex Margotta and Konrad Babraj will represent SoCal Scullers in the Men's Youth Double Sculls Sunday at 11:01 a.m.
